Turtle Tempo Live Music // The Covasettes // Elijah Miller

If you’re into live music, preferably unsigned at the grassroots level, then you’ve probably already heard of Turtle Tempo and their unsigned music nights.  Every now and then, Dan Sheed brings together some outstanding rockers to a venue in London for a night of fantastic music!  Last Saturday, the 23rd of February, The Covasettes headlined an indie-rock show at The Finsbury Pub.

If you missed it, don’t worry we’ve got your back!  Here’s your chance of speaking with the bands, or them speaking to you, or whatever!  Nexus takes a moment to ask some of the artists some quick-fire questions about their opinions on unsigned music nights, and even get some insight into their plans for 2019.

If you had to describe your band in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

The Covasettes: I think I’d have to go with ‘really, really good’.

Why do you think live performance nights are important to unsigned or emerging artists?

The Covasettes: It gives music fans a chance to see upcoming bands for a fraction of what you’d pay at ‘bigger’ shows. Everyone started out in smaller venues, so it’s a great chance to get in early!

What is the most enjoyable part of performing onstage?

The Covasettes: For me, it has to be the way the crowd reacts, when we have people dancing and singing our songs we can’t explain how good that makes us feel. It’s taken us three years to get that, but we made it!

Who inspires you to make music?

The Covasettes: Ourselves and the people who support us. We all love playing and making music, it’s not a chore, it’s our favourite thing to do, and we wouldn’t give it up for the world!

What are your plans for 2019?

The Covasettes: More of the same, we’ll be releasing more music and gigging more too. It’s a dead exciting time to be a Covasette!

If you had to describe your band in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

Elijah Miller: An energetic four-piece with cinematic melodies and profound lyrics.

Why do you think live performance nights are important to unsigned or emerging artists?

Elijah Miller: For unsigned artists live performances are everything – it’s where you get to make your biggest statements to people who haven’t seen you before, somewhere that you can express yourself in a way that you just can’t on a record.

What is the most enjoyable part of performing onstage?

Elijah Miller: The vulnerability of opening yourself up to strangers, ready for any kind of criticism. It’s where you can lay everything out on the table and say ‘this is what we are.’ Although usually it’s a fairly safe space if it’s your fan base that is there, but early on in my career every crowd was a new crowd, and that can be really daunting but equally as exciting.

Who inspires you to make music?

Elijah Miller: Anyone who shows real passion in what they do. IDLES are my favourite band currently because of their drive and charisma towards what they do (alongside writing incredible music).

What are your plans for 2019?

Elijah Miller: I’m hoping to record a five track EP and try get on some kind of tour. I just want to get myself out there more and try get in front of some big crowds – that’s what music is really about for me.
