EP Review: So Cynical // RCKLSS

Brighton band RCKLSS describe their sound as heavy pop. Their EP ‘So Cynical’, is released on the back of support from Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing in the South. The band say that they’ve got something to prove and “when we hit an emotion; whether it’s anger, nostalgia, or angst, we really hit it as hard as possible on this debut.”

You can hear the influences on ‘So Cynical.’ Neck Deep and All Time Low. However, RCKLSS have their own sound and bring their own take to pop punk. This is evident on the patchy opener, ‘Every Time.’ A song that sounds like summer, I found the chorus nasally and grating.

I thought this song lacked originality, but became pleasantly surprised by recent single ‘Tell You.’ That is where they come into their own. There is an emotional vulnerability in this song that keeps the listener engaged. Admittedly, the guitars could be placed higher in the mix as they don’t create much of an impact but the chorus is very strong and catchy.

“Tell You” explores the heavier elements of RCKLSS’ sound. The structure to this song sounds like it’s been influenced by A Day to Remember. The lyrics are heartfelt and the potential is there. There is variation on this EP, helping it stand out. The songs flow very well together on the whole, but the band saves the best or last on ‘Empty Space.’ The song taps into every emotion, the ambient cleans matching the beautiful vocals. The lyrics could be about an empty void after a personal loss. It gives the listener a feeling of hope, ending the EP on a positive note.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from ‘So Cynical’ but it delivers, executing the message of hope very well. I am excited to see how RCKLSS’ sound progresses from here.
