Nexus Meets… Artist – Cally Rhodes.
What inspired you to get into music?
I’ve always had a love for music! Even as a very young kid, it made me feel really happy to sing. It was a really organic thing that happened naturally.
What are your earliest memories of music?
I actually remember singing a solo in the school play when I was about four years old dressed as a little rag doll! I remember that really well. Embarrassingly, I used to cry every time I finished a show because I didn’t want them to end!
Who do you consider to be your musical influences?
Kate Bush is my favourite because I love the elegance of her storytelling through music. I also dig Shakira and The Chainsmokers.
If you could work with any other artist, producer or creative, who would that be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with Troye Sivan. I think his voice is golden!
What do you think the benefits are to being a solo artist?
I like creating my own vision artistically. I feel like there’s no compromising which makes my job more fun and relaxing.
What is your process for songwriting?
I start by knowing exactly what I want to write about. I then take my idea to the piano and find relevant chords to fit the mood of my idea. That usually triggers vocal melodies and finally lyrics. I write songs acoustically before any production is added.
What one achievement are you most proud of with your music?
I liked being ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Week’ Nationally. I found it really flattering to be picked by the BBC.
How important do you feel the use of social media is to an artist?
I think it’s a cool way for artists to connect with their fans around the world. Instagram is my favourite right now.
What advice would you give to emerging artists?
Write music for you and not for anyone else!
What have you got planned for the remainder of 2018?
I’ll be releasing more music, developing my style and taking a little trip to LA!
