Nexus Meets… Hendrix

Using poignant lyricism and futuristic sounds, solo artist Ian Hendrix has been described as passionate, exciting and captivating. We speak with Ian about his latest release ‘What Happened 2’ – the 7th instalment in his 8 episode series. We also speak with him about music videos, discovering new music and more!

What can you tell us about the single ‘What Happened 2’?

‘What Happened 2’ is about when relationships fall apart and it doesn’t make sense why. Things are going well and it just ends and you’re left wondering “what happened?”

What was the recording and writing process like?

I had written the original ‘What Happened’ when I was younger. It was about the same subject but it was goofy and a bit juvenile. I loved the premise though and wanted a more mature version of the song. To put me in the mindset I wanted to be in to write the song, I purposely picked a fight with my wife. Once I was feeling the emotions I felt the song needed it took me about five minutes to write the lyrics. I’d like to apologise to my wife! I’m sorry! I love you! šŸ™‚

The recording process was a little more arduous. I went through a couple of productions. I needed to put something behind Katie Shorey’s vocals that matched her intensity and emotion. I’m really happy with the final product.

Who or what inspired the single?

This version of the song was inspired by the original version which was about a relationship breakup, but with some tongue-in-cheek humour. As mentioned earlier, I wanted something a little more mature for this version.

You released a music video for ‘What Happened 2’. What can you tell us about this?

The video is the 7th episode in an 8-episode series. Juan Cano Guillermo of WTH Studios provided the amazing animations. I don’t want to give away too much because the last video will reveal a lot of the story, but I wanted to tell a story through my music. I think with what Juan has been able to create along with the music, I feel the message I wanted to convey is in each one.

Did you encounter any challenges when creating the video?

Once Juan and I had an idea of the direction we wanted to go it’s been really easy. I would say the only challenge has been that Juan and I have never met in person. All our communication has been via email, but it has worked out great!

If you could change anything about the video what would it be?

I’m really happy with the video. I don’t feel there’s anything that needs to change.

What do you think is the best way to discover new music nowadays?

This is such a great question, especially with the pandemic. It used to be you’d find music by going to live shows at local venues. Now, it’s all online. What’s great is it’s easier to get your music out nowadays, but you’re also now a small fish amongst millions of other smaller fish. You have to find ways to stand out. How can you be original when everybody is trying to do the same thing?

Do you have a message for our readers?

I hope your readers are staying safe during these crazy times. I hope everybody gets time to discover new things, develop new relationships and be able to overcome personal obstacles. I pray for peace and that we can all love one another.
