Nexus Meets… Mako Bron
A music industry professional with over 20 years of experience, Mako Bron has a sophisticated and engaging sound. After a hiatus of, well, a while, Mako is back with his EP Mirror Mirror. We speak with the Australian singer-songwriter about Mirror Mirror, emerging bands and much more!
What is the backstory to your EP Mirror Mirror?
COVID lockdown was really the catalyst for this EP coming together. I’d been playing around with a bunch of songs for a couple of years or so and it somehow all came together while I was locked inside.
What was the writing and recording process like?
‘Something Always’ and ‘Pulling The Line’ were written primarily as guitar songs which I then recorded in a classic rock format with a few synth parts. Both ‘Snow White’ and ‘Awkward Moment’ were written and recorded using my DAW synths, drum machines and some sampled guitars as the primary instruments. Hence, there’s really two sides to the EP – the rock and the electronic.
I read you took an absence from music, how do you feel returning to the scene?
It’s been great. I’m actually a bit frustrated with myself for leaving it so long. I’ve been encouraged watching artists of a similar vintage, like Donny Benet, finding an audience.
What is your greatest musical achievement to date?
Not much. š
I think Mirror Mirror is the best thing I’ve recorded if that’s what you mean. In the past, opening for some artists I really admire has been really special too.
Does Mirror Mirror hold significance for you?
I think the songs will always remind me of a transitional period in my life and the world as a whole. There was a lot going on when I wrote this – COVID, the US election, BLM and a big personal change. I think all of these themes flow through it.
If you could change anything about the EP what would it be?
Ah…I’d probably add live drums to ‘Awkward Moment’, but, bygones.
Do you have any advice for emerging bands?
Yes. The only reason to play music is because you love it. If you don’t absolutely love it, don’t do it.
Do you have future plans?
I’m just putting the finishing touches on my next EP now, and I’m starting to rehearse up a live show with the band. Watch this space.
Do you have a message for our readers?
Keep looking for new music, there are some real gems out there.
