Track of the Week: More Than A Maybe // Juna N Joey
Young, bright and beautiful, brother and sister duo Juna N Joey are establishing themselves with their signature country sound. After their well-received debut single ‘Stay Young’ (released in 2019), the pair are continuously blooming and evolving as artists. Featured in The Other Side Reviews, Essentially Pop, Maverick Country, Find No Enemy, PopFad Blog, Sinusoidal Music and various playlists, Juna N Joey is turning heads on an international scale. The latest addition to their well-received repertoire is ‘More Than A Melody’.
Despite being only 17 and 19 years of age, Juna N Joey are confident, charismatic and creative multi-instrumentalists who have worked with songwriters across the USA. In ‘More Than A Melody’, the pair dusts their signature country-pop sound with layers of rock drawing on a heavier, hard-hitting style. Nodding toward 90s country-rock sound but with a strong contemporary edginess, Juna N Joey showcases their innovativeness as musicians.
While the melody can hold its own, it is the incorporation of Joey and Juna’s dulcet vocals that make it far more meaningful. Penned as an intimate take on young love, the track takes us back to the anxiety, fear, frustration and ultimately positive response to “asking a person out”. Joey explains that ‘More Than A Maybe’ looks at the “…courage to ask a girl out on a date and face a potential rejection. On the other hand, you have to just do it and ask them out and you are hoping for anything but a hard no even if it is more than a maybe.”
I love so much about ‘More Than A Maybe’ and Juna N Joey’s music in general, but it is the interplay between their rich vocals that make the meaning even more intimate. Juna N Joey’s sound far surpasses their years as they find that delicate balance between sophistication and youthful innocence.
