Up and coming Midlands artist YNES (pronounced Yin-es) is releasing her brand new song ‘Used to Be’ on Grrrl Grrroan. Post punk and the DIY music scene inspire her music. She does everything herself from designing flyers for independent gigs, to developing a strong online presence. ‘Used to Be’ is one of the best songs I have heard this year because it has passionate energy and a snarling attitude.
I like this song because it has pop elements and a catchy riff, which repeats throughout the song. The lyrics are about the feeling of shedding your youth while reminiscing past memories: “We use to sneak into the uni at midnight / And ran through halls and climbed up walls and somehow made it home alright.” I like the autotuned effect on YNES’ voice because it adds a punk attitude. It’s a beautiful song because it has very honest, real lyrics. I hope it gets YNES more recognition in the future.
