Track Review: What I Mean To You // RYAL

Influenced by the likes of Tame Impala, Thom Yorke and Bonobo, RYAL embraces their listeners with flowing soundscapes and intimate stories. The collaborative project of singer-songwriter Jacque Ryal and producer Aaron Nevezie, RYAL have been releasing music for approximately 7 years – according to Spotify, that is. Featured on notable blogs like We Write About Music, PopDust, Atwood Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, and various playlists, RYAL are receiving critical acclaim across the globe. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘What I Mean To You’.

Hot on the heels of their track ‘By The Minute’, RYAL bring a unique pop style in ‘What I Mean To You’. The strong beats and underlying synths scream commercial synth-pop, while the acoustic instrumentation sprinkles indie-pop into the melody. Interestingly enough, while this track can be placed easily with other synth-driven pop songs, RYAL find that balance between organic and electronic in the harmonic arrangement. Add Jacque’s bold vocals and you have a sound that can be placed alongside Taylor Swift or Demi Lovato.

While ‘What I Mean To You’ has a soft, soothing, flowing cinematic ambience, RYAL show their depth with the more serious lyrical message. ‘What I Mean To You’ is not whimsy or laidback haze, it touches on relationships, anxiety and empowering stability. In the wistful narrative, Jacque Ryal sings about a relationship teetering on a breakup; however, she “reaches in to save it with an affirmation of safety and love. The verse conversation revolves in a chorus that keeps you singing along. It glows with a commitment to the partnership and the effort that goes into maintaining it…”

Sincere, soothing and heartfelt, ‘What I Mean To You’ is a tender track from RYAL.
